A Royal Romance
A Royal Romance
A Royal Romance explores Australia's relationship with Queen Elizabeth II, who has reigned since 1952. Since her first visit in 1954, many Australians have continued to display great affection and respect for the Queen. Royalist sentiments may be less strong in 2010, with many people believing Australia should become a republic; however, when given the opportunity to sever these ties in 1999 through a referendum, Australians voted not to do so. This one-hour documentary provides a historical context for understanding the debate about constitutional monarchy and republicanism in Australia.

A Royal Romance is suitable for middle and senior secondary students of Australian History and Society. In presenting a chronological narrative of the current British monarch's relationship with Australia and its people, it goes behind the tabloid images of royal romances and royal scandals to present an overview of how and why Australians have responded to Queen Elizabeth II since her accession to the British throne in 1952. The documentary is very entertaining and vividly presents and analyses the continuing fascination the royal family holds for many people.
