Journey through the solar system
Journey through the solar system
In order from closest to the sun to furthest away, the nine planets in our solar system are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. There are over 61 major moons in the solar system, with many of the planets having more than just one. Between Mars and Jupiter lies an asteroid belt - numerous rocky bodies that orbit the sun - most of the asteroids in the solar system are found within this belt. There is also another asteroid belt known as the Kuiper Belt, which exists past Pluto on the outskirts of our solar system and the full extent of it has not yet been discovered.

Not all of the planets are made of the same material, in fact the inner planets (those closest to the sun) are vastly different to the outer planets (those furthest from the sun). The inner planets are made up mostly of rock and have few or no moons, these are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars. The outer planets are very large, made up mostly of gas, have rings around them and many moons; these are: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. Pluto is the odd one out because it is small, rocky and only has one moon. In fact, Pluto is so unlike its nearby planets that some astronomers have suggested that it may actually be part of the Kuiper Belt, an asteroid belt that was discovered in 1992.
