Majority call for smoking ban in pubs and clubs
Majority call for smoking ban in pubs and clubs
Over the past 20 years our attitudes to smoking have changed dramatically. Today we can barely fathom someone smoking at their office desk or smoking at the table next to us during dinner but less than five years ago this was the norm. With 80% of the Australian population now non-smoking, more and more attention is being paid to the growing evidence which confirms that passive smoking is a very real health risk.

Over the past five years the Federal Government and the individual state and territory governments have acknowledged the need to restrict smoking in some environments. The Federal Government banned smoking in aircrafts, buses and in all Commonwealth government buildings, while the states and territories have banned smoking in most enclosed areas such as shopping centres, theatres and restaurants. In fact, in most of Australia, the only establishments that have remained exempt from these restrictions are pubs and clubs.
