Bigger than a health problem
Bigger than a health problem
Something inherently wrong with our lifestyle is causing a high number of Australians to reach dangerous weight levels. It has been estimated that around 7 million Australians are either overweight or obese. It seems that overall more men are overweight than women (67% compared to 52%) but more young women are obese than young men (22% versus 18%). As this rate, it's thought that about 75 per cent of the Australian population will be overweight or obese by 2020.The reason that obesity has come to be seen as an epidemic is the fact that obesity levels have increased so suddenly in the last two decades, in fact the number of obese Australians has almost doubled. Take that figure and then imagine the increase in health care costs generated by the rising number of obese Australians. The total comes to around $1.5 billion per year, and this sum is expanding along with our waistlines.
